The film depicts the CSA’s (Confederate States of America), a slave-owning economy, as a workplace. This is similar to what the US workplace looks like today. Both systems are heavily reliant on an exploitation culture for economic gains. In both instances, individuals and groups were subjected unfair treatment based on race or social status. African Americans, for example, were denied any rights during slavery and subjected to harsh conditions. They are also still in a similar position today due to racism systemic and a lack access to resources. Additionally, while women’s roles within society have changed significantly since then, there is still an unequal balance of power when it comes to gender representation in many workplaces which can lead to similar forms of exploitation as those seen under slavery. Lastly, workers are increasingly treated as disposable commodities without regard to their safety and wellbeing. This can be done through unsafe working conditions that lack proper protection or by paying them inadequately with no benefits. These factors show that the workplaces of past and current U.S. workers are similar in terms of exploitation and unfairness.
