In my research, I found two possible solutions/positions: the introduction of a universal health care system and private insurance. A universal healthcare system is utilitarian from an ethical standpoint, as it aims to provide access to quality care for all regardless of their socioeconomic situation or circumstance. On the other hand, private health insurance could be viewed through a Kantian lens which emphasizes treating people with respect and dignity by allowing them to choose their own coverage options – something which may not be possible under a more one-size-fits-all approach.
A universal health care system would lead to better overall health, as it will increase access to medical services and improve the quality. It could also reduce costs. Conversely, private health insurance could potentially result in higher premiums as well as unequal coverage depending on an individual’s ability or willingness to pay – thus creating a situation where some are better off than others. Both options have pros and cons which need to be considered before making a decision on the best way to ensure equal access to health care.
