Evidence-based approaches are used to treat clients who present with problematic behaviors. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a useful approach, as it focuses primarily on identifying unhelpful thoughts patterns that underlie the behavior. CBT aims to determine the causes and effects of disruptive behavior. These can include external factors, interpersonal dynamics or beliefs and expectations. Through the process of exploring and discovering, people can learn to better understand their situation. They may then make positive changes.
Dialectical Behavioral Treatment (DBT) is also beneficial in treating those who exhibit disruptive behavior. DBT employs a number of different techniques to assist individuals in understanding how their feelings are impacting their behaviors and thoughts. These include mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills. DBT can help individuals to live a better life by using new strategies for problem-solving instead of maladaptive coping methods such as aggression.
Research suggests that these treatments are effective in treating people with behavioral problems.
