The US Department of Health and Human Services is responsible for coordinating and supervising public health on a national scale. HHS develops policy initiatives, such as programs for disease prevention or healthcare reform. These are implemented in all 50 states. In addition, the HHS provides grants to local and state government organizations to help fund these initiatives.
At the state level, public health responsibilities lie with individual departments such as Maryland’s Department of Health who develop their own set of guidelines which must adhere to federal regulations. This may include establishing public clinics and creating systems for data collection that will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of specific policies. Finally, at the local level this usually involves community-based organizations like hospitals or non-profits who work directly with individuals on issues such as immunizations or nutrition education – providing services tailored towards specific needs.
