When advocating social justice, autonomy, and equality for all individuals and groups in our society it’s important to acknowledge and tackle systemic barriers. It includes discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity or gender, as well sexual orientation and religion.
In order to promote social justice and autonomy, it’s important to adopt a proactive strategy that tackles these barriers and inequalities. It is important to advocate for policies that encourage diversity, inclusion and equity.
Here are three objectives that could be proposed for an intervention to reach these goals:
- The goal is to increase awareness of and understand systemic inequalities and barriers. Develop programs and educational materials which provide insight and information about the inequalities and barriers that are present in our society. These could be training programs for health care providers, workshops in the community, or informational material that is widely disseminated to the general public.
- Incorporate diversity and equity into all areas of society: Adopt policies and procedures that encourage diversity and equity. It could be implementing practices to promote diversity in hiring, creating inclusive workplaces, welcoming all people, or promoting education opportunities for all.
- Empower communities and individuals: Create programs that enable communities and individuals alike to be advocates for themselves. These programs could include programs designed to give individuals the skills and knowledge to be able to speak up for themselves. They might also provide support and resources to those who are trying to overcome systemic obstacles and inequalities.
We can create a society that is more fair and just for everyone by taking an active approach in promoting social justice and autonomy.
