Recent statistics show that unmarried women are having more children than in previous decades. In 2019, the US Census Bureau conducted a study that revealed there were 16 million women raising 22 million children alone in the United States. It is an increase of approximately 60% from the 10 million households in 1990.
In addition, studies show that an increasing number of unmarried mothers are choosing to give birth on their own and not rely on the marriage/partnership model. It can be explained by factors such as increased financial stability, improved access to healthcare, personal preference, or lifestyle. The social acceptance for such families is increasing over the years, with stigma decreasing.
The data from the past few years suggests that single mothers have become more common. Due to the presence of supportive networks, better employment opportunities and many other factors this trend is expected to continue.
