The CDC has a critical role in addressing public health concerns and implementing programs to promote essential public services. The research will be focused on a practicum that could address a specific public health problem. For this project, the public health concern chosen is the rising incidence of Diabetes in the U.S. The paper provides a brief background of diabetes and describes the public health services that are essential to addressing the issue. It also discusses the goal of the project. Finally, it applies theory to the proposed project.

Background

Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by high blood glucose levels resulting from the body’s inability to produce or use insulin effectively. This disease has significant public health implications and affects millions around the world. The CDC estimates that approximately 34,2 million Americans suffer from diabetes. An additional 88 millions have prediabetes – a condition where blood sugar levels exceed normal, but are not enough for diabetes to be diagnosed (CDC, 2021). The seventh most common cause of death is diabetes in the United States. It can also lead to other serious conditions such as kidney failure, heart disease and blindness.

The essential public services are a framework created by the CDC for a systematic, comprehensive approach to practice in public health. These ten essential public health services include:

In addressing diabetes as a public health concern, the goal is to reduce diabetes’ burden on the healthcare sector, prevent the occurrence of new cases, and improve quality of life. Public health services are used to encourage healthy behavior, raise awareness about diabetes and complications and give access to resources for diabetes management.
